Choosing an ERP for a growing Nigerian business

What an ERP really is

An ERP (enterprise resource planning) system is one piece of software that runs the core of your business: money, stock, people, sales and purchasing. Instead of each department keeping its own spreadsheet, everyone works from the same records.

The point of an ERP isn't more features. It's one version of the truth.

Signs you've outgrown spreadsheets

  • Month-end takes days because numbers from different teams don't match.
  • Nobody is sure how much stock you actually have.
  • Payroll is calculated by hand and checked by hand.
  • Managers wait for reports instead of looking them up.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does it fit how we work, or will we have to bend our processes to it?
  • Can it handle naira, VAT and PAYE the way Nigerian businesses need?
  • What happens when the power or internet goes down?
  • Who supports it after launch, and how fast do they respond?
  • Can we start with the modules we need now and add more later?

“Buy for the business you're becoming, but launch with the business you have.”

Start small, then grow

The most successful rollouts start with one or two modules, usually finance and inventory, get people comfortable, then add HR, payroll and sales. Trying to switch everything on at once is the most common reason ERP projects stall.

If you're weighing up an ERP, we're happy to look at how you work today and tell you honestly what you need.
