Plan for outages, not around them
In Nigeria, power cuts and network drops are part of daily operations. Systems designed in places where electricity is constant often assume it will be. Ours shouldn't.
Keep the important data off the premises
Hosting your core system in a reliable data centre means it stays up even when your office is dark. Staff can carry on from a phone on mobile data, and nothing is lost when a generator fails.
Let devices work offline
For tills, warehouses and field teams, apps can save work on the device and sync when the connection returns. Done properly, a dropped connection never loses a sale or a stock count.
Protect what stays on site
- Put routers, servers and key PCs on a UPS or inverter.
- Back up automatically and keep a copy off site.
- Test restoring from backup, not just making it.
“The best time to test your backup is before you need it.”
Resilience is mostly good design decisions made early. If you're planning a new system, build these in from the start.
